Department of Health Publishes National Data Tables on Non-Monetary Healthcare Statistics

The Department of Health has commenced publication of national data tables on non-monetary healthcare statistics. These tables will be released yearly in advance of their publication via Eurostat and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The information will be hosted on gov.ie, providing a centralised place for the public to access data and its metadata. It will also be available on data.gov.ie in line with the government’s commitment to the European Union Open Data Directive.

The data will allow researchers and the wider public more timely access to national information and will provide them with a better understanding of Ireland’s data on a range of health topics and how it can compare with that of other countries.

The tables published include national healthcare statistics compiled by the Department of Health as part of the Non-Monetary Health Care Statistics questionnaire, administered jointly by Eurostat, OECD and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Highlights from the published data include:

• Cataract surgery was the most common surgical procedure in Ireland in 2021, with a total of 33,348 procedures, followed by caesarean section surgery with 21,523 procedures and hip replacement surgery with 11,159 procedures.
• The number of practising nurses in Ireland in 2022 was 67,808, an increase of 5.8% from the previous year.
• The number of practising dentists in Ireland for 2022 stood at 2,420 dentists, an increase of 3.9% from the previous year.
• The number of practising pharmacists in Ireland for 2022 was 5,717, an increase of 3.3% from the previous year
• In 2022, a total of 102 CT scanners, 9 PET scanners, 29 gamma cameras and 51 radiation therapy equipment were operational in Ireland.
